Leading Through Chaos:

Focus on Learning in Chaotic Times

In these tumultuous times, you are rightly prioritizing safety, health, food insecurity, and legions of operational details, like transportation and how many desks can fit 6’ apart in a room. The urgent and changing demands of how to have some form of “school” have made it almost impossible to focus on our core work—LEARNING!

This seminar is suitable for educators, directors, department heads, principals, curriculum leaders and superintendents.

These two sessions will ask and answer the question: How do we actually focus on learning right now?

• Thursday, October 22nd ( 9-11 a.m.): For the first session, participants will use a protocol to analyze a school/district initiative they felt was successful, or on the way to success, from this past spring. This fall, we will distill key elements of success to build upon moving forward. Participants will also engage in a simulation to illustrate the power and process of rapid improvement cycles so that they can apply rapid learning-by-doing in their own contexts after the session. Participants will identify what they want to laser-focus on this fall. Specifically, on how they want to guide their decision-making in an uncertain and changing context. This session will offer very practical and grounded context for your current work.
• Tuesday, November 17th ( 9-11 a.m.): For the second session, we’re going to try to get out of managing-crisis mode and see crisis as opportunity. What is happening, or potentially could happen, in your school systems that would make a big difference for student learning—e.g., engaging parents as partners in a different way, students taking more ownership of their learning, individualizing learning in a different way, talking about race and racism explicitly, shifting curriculum and/or other sacred cows to better meet the needs of the students in front of us . . . We’ll read a couple of texts to help us think about that, and we’ll workshop their ideas using design-based thinking.

Both workshops are highly interactive and include practical tools that you can apply in your everyday practice.

Elizabeth City is Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), where she is Executive Director of Reach Every Reader and recently served as Director of the Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program. Liz has served as a teacher, instructional coach, principal, and consultant, in each role focused on helping all children, and the educators who work with them, realize their full potential. She is currently focused on accelerating the development of equitable, learningrich environments. She has authored and co-authored several books for educators, including: Meeting Wise; Data Wise; Strategy in Action; Instructional Rounds in Education; Resourceful Leadership; and The Teacher’s Guide to Leading Student-Centered Discussions.
